Here at Esty we're all about handmade lingerie! So we were thrilled when popular sewing and pattern-making blogger Maddie agreed to write a series of tutorials exclusively for our fans and customers who want to try their hand at making their own bras and knickers. Find out more about Maddie and check out her useful lingerie making and laundering guides below...

Hi, my name is Maddie Flanigan and I am the blogger behind Madalynne, the cool pattern making and sewing blog. Three to four times a week, I post about a myriad of subjects - tutorials on how to draft a sloper, interviews of independent pattern makers and designers, and what projects I'm currently working on.

My most recent adventures in sewing have revolved around bras and knickers. I never throw away old clothes, instead, I store clothes that I don’t wear anymore in boxes that I ‘shop’ months or years later. Over the course of several years, my stash of old clothing grew very large. The silhouettes weren’t in fashion but the fabrics were still beautiful. I couldn’t part with clothing that I still felt had a life so I decided to upcycle them into bras and

Bras and knickers are an interesting and fun category to sew and pattern make. They’re interesting in that they are sewn quite differently than “normal” clothing (i.e. woven blouses and skirts). They’re also fun because they can be sewn in a day and not weeks or months. Best of all, in my opinion, is that there is no rolling up the rugs and bending over on floor to cut pattern pieces. Because the pattern pieces are so small, they can be cut on even the smallest table, which is a huge plus.

Over the course of several months, I read many books, blogs, and pamphlets on bra and knicker sewing and pattern making. By no means do I consider myself an expert – I believe that in this hobby, there is too much to learn to ever be considered an expert – but I have learned a lot from the resources I have found. In the following pages, I share with you what I have learned.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, feel free to email me at If you’re so inclined, you can even call me – we can chat – my number is 954-448-9968 (I live in the United States so please consider the time change when calling me – don’t call me in the middle of the night!).
